Sacramento Tea Party

Inspired by the 1773 Boston Tea Party rebellion against the British colonial taxes, nearly 1,000 tea parties were held across the United States, April 15, 2009, opposing more taxes, out of control spending, stimulus packages, nationalized (socialized) medicine, government control of industry, and redistribution of wealth.

More than 10,000 people attended the Sacramento Tea Party at the California State Capitol, displaying signs that said, "No to Big Government, "No to More Taxes," "No to More Ridiculous Spending," "If Debt is the Problem, How Can it be the Solution?" "We Cannot Spend Our Way to Prosperity," "I Will Pay for my Mortgage, You Pay for Yours!"

Two quotes from Thomas Jefferson were carried by more than one person: "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not," and "A government big enough to give you everything you need, is strong enough to take everything you have."

It was exciting to be part of this historical event and I am reminded of the scripture given to me at Writing for the Soul Conference in February 2009, "Look at the nations and watch, and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told," Habakkuk 1:5.

Father God, thank you for your word. Thank you for our wonderful country. We pray that you give our leaders wisdom and courage to do what is right and make good decisions for our people. Our faith, hope and love are in you. Amen.

Wow, Sue, 10,000 people showed up. That's fantastic in the middle of a work week. Thanks for sharing your "inside" coverage of the event.

Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you for dropping by. I think the number was actually larger. When we were there, they told us 20,000. That surprised everyone, even the people who planned it. They only placed two porta-potties for the event. Although the media didn't report this, a conservative news station reported only 5,000 attended the Sacramento Tea Party, but I checked with the organizer and she said at least 10,000 people attended. As far as I could see in any direction, I saw people and signs. It was wonderful!
